A city of finance and fashion, Milan is a cosmopolitan and modern part of the mighty Italy. Partly destroyed in the Second World War, it lacks some of the historical buildings of Rome or Venice, but makes up for it with modern pleasures: shopping, food, football, opera and the great nightlife. Right in the centre of northern Italy, Milan is an exciting place to visit and a great starting point for an Italian adventure. Milan is not, of course, completely bereft of historical buildings, in fact it has some stunners. The iconic Duomo is one of the world’s largest gothic cathedrals and can be found near the centre of Milan, along with plenty of beautiful churches and the Vittorio Emanuele, an ancient shopping gallery. Art lovers can visit Da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’ at the Santa Maria Alle Grazie Basilica in Milan, or one of the many museums and galleries to be found in the city- this including the Leonardo Da Vinci Museum of Science and Technology. Milan can come across as severe in appearance when compared to the other large Italian cities- it is more modern, more stylish and more business-like. Under the surface, however, it is unique, diverse and interesting, and great for shopping! One of the ‘Big Four’ cities in the fashion world, retail therapy is a definite option for any trip to Milan- in fact, it’s a necessity for absorbing the true culture of the city! Most of the boutiques can be found in the Quadrilatero d’Oro (Gold Rectangle). Football is another highlight of Milan, and there are often AC Milan or FC Internazionale games at San Siro during the season from August to May. The city is not far from Italy’s border with Switzerland, which is a particularly spectacular part of the country, comprising some beautiful mountain ranges and Lake Como. For more international travel, Milan is also handy to France and Austria. Close by are some wonderful Italian cities- the port of Genoa, beautiful Venice and Verona, the charming city in which Romeo and Juliet is set. For an amazing Italy road trip experience, pick up a motorhome in Milan and head south to Bari, seeing the entire length of the country along the way.
