Sydney, your starting point for a great New South Wales road trip.
Bold and exciting Sydney has everything- history, beaches, art, culture, cuisine, fashion and more. Visually, it is recognisable worldwide, the type of city that is featured in an alien takeover movie montage. The Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House combo are absolutely iconic, representative not only of the city but of the entire country of Australia. The capital of New South Wales and largest city in the country, Sydney is the entry point for most international visitors, making it a convenient place to kick off a campervan holiday.
Sydney is set on both sides of Sydney Harbour. It was the sheltered natural harbour which made it the first British colony in the country, a settlement for convicts transported there from Britain. Nowadays, no trace of the penal colony can be seen- Sydney is a diverse place which can hold its own on the global stage. Shopping, dining, entertainment and the arts are world-class, centered around the ports at Darling Harbour and Circular Quay.
Sydney’s different sectors make exploring the city a delight. The eastern suburbs are trendy and fun, home to Bondi Beach and several other lovely white-sand beaches. Parramatta is a second CBD and home to a number of historic sites. Manly is reachable by a ferry across the harbour and is a laid-back alternative to Bondi and the other beaches to the south. Sydney’s attractions are not exclusive to its city centre; the suburbs are interesting, unique and worth seeing.
Sydney is surrounded by some serious National Park action, easy to escape to when city living becomes too tough. Further afield is the string of cities and beach towns all the way up Australia’s east coast, and the refined cultural hotspot Melbourne to the south, a hop skip and a jump away from wild Tasmania. Inland lies the true-blue Aussie Outback. A road trip from Sydney could go in many directions!
